Corporate climate change disclosures
ACCA Australia launches research report
09 May 2007
ACCA Australia has launched a research report in collaboration with Net Balance Foundation, investigating the standards of climate change disclosures in the 50 largest Australian corporate companies.
This research is the second in a series of three reports investigating particular areas of corporate reporting in Australia. Organisations' disclosures were assessed using a set of criteria based on the FTSE4Good climate change criteria, launched in February 2007 and ranked according to their score. The report summarises the findings of the research, identifies any trends, outlines strengths and weaknesses and makes recommendations for the future.
The overall findings were that although there were some high quality disclosures on climate change from a few companies, there is significant scope for improvement. This is demonstrated by an average overall score of just 21% across all 50 companies. However, there were areas of (relative) strengths identified in the analysis including disclosures of operational climate change policies, provision of emissions data over two to three years (or more) and participation in local Australian climate change initiatives, for example, Greenhouse Challenge.
