Kent accountancy student receives top global marks
It has just been announced that Rachael Brailsford of Maidstone, Kent, has achieved the highest worldwide score for the Business and Analysis paper of the ACCA Qualification in the June 2008 exam sitting which was undertaken by 18,970 students globally.
Rachael, who is account senior, at Thompson & Co says: “I chose to study the ACCA qualification as an alternative to university. The structure of the qualification enabled me to gain invaluable practical experience whilst working towards the exams. Since completing my ACCA exams I now have a renewed determination to continue with my studies to achieve my professional goals."
Wyn Mears, director of ACCA UK says: “It is to Rachael’s credit that she has done so well in these exams. The papers within the ACCA Qualification are very challenging and to have come top in such a competitive environment is exceptional. We are certain that this will give Rachael an excellent foundation to build her future career.”
The partners at Thompson & Co say: “We are enormously proud of Rachael and her incredible achievement. Since joining Thompson & Company straight from Chatham Grammar School in June 2004 as a trainee Rachael has been committed to her work and studies that have at times been demanding. We are delighted that our commitment to support Rachael in her training and to give her the opportunity to study for her qualifications whilst working in a busy accounting practice has played a part in contributing to her success today. Rachael is now concentrating on her future accounting career with Thompson & Company and is busy building up her own portfolio of clients.”

Notes to Editors
1. ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is the global body for professional accountants. We aim to offer business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management. We have 325,606 students and 122,426 members in 170 countries worldwide.
2. ACCA believes that globalisation of business requires one set of reporting standards. We favour principles-based, not rules-based standards, which is why we support the worldwide implementation of IFRS.
3. ACCA believes that tax systems should be transparent, simplified, fair and certain.
4. Complying with regulations affects SMEs disproportionately, which is why ACCA urges governments and standard setters to ‘think small first'’
