First winners of ACCA Scholarships are announced
The first outstanding students to be awarded scholarships which will provide them with valuable support to help them complete their ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) studies have been named.
The five students, who will now have their exam and subscription fees covered until they become members or for up to five years, come from Bangladesh, Tanzania, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and Zambia and were chosen from more than 300 applicants from around the world.
The Scholarships have been made possible by a bequest from Ms Muriel Simpson, a Fellow of ACCA, who left money in her will to fund the further education of ACCA students who have already proven themselves to be of sufficient merit and distinction in ACCA Qualification examinations.
In addition to the financial support, scholarship winners will also receive complete sets of ACCA study materials from ACCA’s official publishers BPP Learning Media or Kaplan Publishing.
The successful students are Mahfuzur Rahman from Bangladesh, Sharon Chiyangwa from the UK, Farida Asgerali from Tanzania, Tetyana Merenyuk from the Ukraine and Chipambamiso Chongo from Zambia.
The Scholarship recipients were selected by a specially convened judging panel – comprising Council members Sara Harvey and Tony Cushing, together with Clare Minchington, Managing Director – Learning & Technical Policy and Laurie Gillow, Director – International Corporate Development. In order to qualify for the scholarship, the students must have achieved excellent results in their ACCA exams to date, and they also had to submit a 1,000-word essay on: ‘How the award of a Scholarship will help me to realise my full potential’.
Clare Minchington said: “The students who have been successful in gaining the scholarship are exceptional. In many cases they have not only had to overcome obstacles in their lives, but they are also striving to help others achieve their aims and are determined to give something back to their communities. Making the decision about which students should receive the Scholarship this year was incredibly difficult, but the five students we have chosen are truly inspirational and we know they will make very good use of the Scholarship.”

Notes to Editors
1. ACCA is the global body for professional accountants. We aim to offer business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management. We have 325,606 students and 122,426 members in 170 countries worldwide.
2. ACCA believes that globalisation of business requires one set of reporting standards. We favour principles-based, not rules-based standards, which is why we support the worldwide implementation of IFRS.
3. ACCA believes that tax systems should be transparent, simplified, fair and certain.
4. Complying with regulations affects SMEs disproportionately, which is why ACCA urges governments and standard setters to ‘think small first'’.
5. The Simpson Scholarship Fund is registered as a charity with the ‘Charity Commission for England and Wales’, reference numbers: 283763 and OSCR SC039878.
