ACCA PRESIDENT LAUNCHES NEW QUALIFICATION IN TRINIDAD
ACCA officially launched its new professional Qualification at a ceremony held in the Trinidad Hilton, in April. ACCA President, Dennis Yeates, formally introduced the new Qualification to over 150 accounting professionals, tuition providers and leaders in the local financial services sector. Also speaking at the event were Esther Le Gendre, head – Corporate Development, ACCA Caribbean, Independent Senator, Dana Seetahal SC, and Anthony Webster, Finance Officer in the Funding and Grants Administration Division of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education.Dennis Yeates explained how the new Qualification, which focuses on professionalism, ethics and workplace competences, 'will allow accountants and financial professionals of tomorrow to be equipped to operate in an industry subject to close scrutiny and will make sure that members in all business sectors benefit from relevant workplace training. It will first be examined in December 2007'. He added that from April onwards, trainees – students or affiliates – will have access to their own online Training Development Matrix (TDM), delivered through ACCA’s website.
Anthony Webster added that:'the shift to international accounting standards and the need to comply with tougher national codes has placed new operational demands on organisations. Thus, building an overall culture of integrity has become one of the greatest challenges of this era.' ACCA’s Caribbean head, Esther Le Gendre underlined the fact that ACCA is determined to meet this challenge head on as it increases focus on professional values, ethics and governance – essential skills needed for accountancy as it moves towards strengthened codes of conduct, regulation and legislation.
