ACCA NIGERIA ANNUAL PRIZEGIVING AND PROFESSIONALISM AND ETHICS EVENT
Victoria Crowne Plaza Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria, November 2007
Delegates from Nigeria's business and accounting communities joined ACCA at the annual prize-giving ceremony, an event which also included a presentation on professionalism and ethics given by Deloitte partner Oduware Uwadiae. Guests included principle partners from Deloitte, and from main sponsor PwC. Also present were senior finance officers from 11 blue chip companies; six managing partners and two partners from accountancy firms; and the COO, registrar, CEO and a council member from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. ACCA members and guests also attended, along with representatives from ACCA learning partners and approved employers.
Chairing the event, Chief Simeon Akinlonu FCCA, director of the British International School, warned guests of the dangers of unethical behaviour, saying 'the accountancy profession is full of temptations which one must have the courage to overcome; to fall into the least of those temptations can be the surest road to ruining a promising career'. Chief Akinlonu expressed his great concern with the issues of ethics and discipline in accountancy, believing that a successful accountant must exhibit virtues such as thoroughness, patience and perseverance, and that there should be no room for sentiment when judgements are being made.
This theme was taken up by the main speaker, Deloitte partner Oduware Uwadiae, who stressed that 'ACCA members must be trustworthy, truthful and honest, and display integrity. They must also act in a manner consistent with the good reputation of the profession, and refrain from any conduct which might bring discredit to either ACCA or to themselves in their professional capacity.'
