ACCA Sustainability Conference 2008 & SESRA
ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) organized the 2008 Sustainability Conference, entitled, Sustainability Now! Towards a Low-Carbon Economy, in conjunction with the United Nations' World Environment Day. This conference was held in partnership with Singapore Compact on the 5th of June 2008.
This conference highlighted the resources and initiatives that promote corporate Singapore 's transition to a low-carbon economy and also examined the key issues surrounding the business need to take action on issues pertaining to sustainability.
The conference luncheon was the platform where winners of the Singapore Environmental & Social Reporting Awards (SESRA) 2007 were announced. Singapore Polytechnic clinched top honours by winning the award for Best Environmental Report with Singapore Epson Industrial Pte Ltd taking the Merit Award.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It was also the same year that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was created. Since then the World Environment Day is commemorated each year on 5 June by governments, organizations and individuals all over the world.
The Guest of Honour for the conference was HE Paul Madden, the British High Commissioner who also delivered the keynote address.
The Guest of Honour for the SESRA luncheon was Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
In line with the theme of the conference, the carbon emissions from the event were offset to ensure that this was a carbon-neutral event.
